It's been 14 years since my first mapping of the geography of social networks. In this time the way we use them has changed and instant messengers have made their way alongside them, simpler and also suitable for older audiences. This year I propose two maps to read in a complementary way: one dedicated to the use of social networks and another which also includes instant messengers. The social world divided into 3 blocks. TikTok is not on the podium. The new map of the most popular social networks by country is almost identical to that of twelve months ago, when we witnessed a consolidation of the positions acquired by the major players in recent years.
The world remains divided into three large blocs: the India Mobile Number Data East, the territories of the former Soviet Union and the rest of the world. The vast majority of nations were conquered by Facebook which is the favorite social network in 157 of the 167 countries analyzed (94%). Today it has reached the milestone of connecting 2 billion people every day and 2.96 billion users every month. Overall, the family of apps, which also includes WhatsApp and Instagram, touches 3.7 billion people every month. The territories of the former Soviet Union continue to be linked to VK (formerly known as V Kontakte) , a social photocopy of Facebook launched by the founder of Telegram and then passed under the control of pro-government companies (most of the voting rights to MFT, a group formed by SAGOZ, Gazprom-Media Holding, Rostec). Its active users are estimated to be just over 100 million.
In China, the favorite social network remains WeChat (Weixin) which has over 1.28 billion active users per month. It is not just a chat service, but a super app, developed by the giant Tencent, which combines messaging functions and the possibility of using mini-apps developed by third parties with the most disparate purposes (leisure and utility, even government services). Over 780 million users use the section that is most similar to a social network (WeChat Moments). It is a garden that is not only fenced, but also controlled by the government. WhatsApp used by 2 billion people every day If in this context of a world divided into three blocks we try to introduce the variable represented by messaging applications, the scenario changes and Facebook loses its centrality.
